Frequently Asked Questions

Who is a good candidate for functional medicine?

Anyone who is seeking health and wellness. Anyone who is seeking answers to why they are experiencing symptoms or disruption in their health. Anyone who is willing to put the time and effort into themselves to get well.  Anyone who is willing and ready to take a different approach to obtaining health and wellness and start living their best life.

Do you take insurance?

Unfortunately, no.  Cash, credit card, and Flexible spending accounts are some of the payment forms that are accepted.

What can I expect during my first visit?

Your first visit involves obtaining a deep understanding of what symptoms you are experiencing, what may be causing inflammation in your body, what type of organ systems need support. I want to take the time to get to know you to understand how to help you.

How long does an appointment take?

The first few appointments may range anywhere from 40 minutes to an hour. As appointments become more regular and consistent, the time may decrease but ideally, you should set aside an hour for your appointment.

What type of testing is done in functional medicine?

Testing may include blood (serum), saliva, urine, and/or stool sampling. These tests may be used to analyze levels (hormones, neurotransmitters, toxicants, inflammation, vitamins, metabolites, the body's ability to eliminate, etc).

Why are functional medicine appointments more expensive than primary care appointments?

Functional medicine involves comprehensive evaluation and individualized planning in order to meet the needs of the patient. Primary care visits often take 15-30 minutes, whereas, functional medicine can take several hours of to identify and devise a plan to treat the root cause of a problem. In addition, insurance companies often cover primary care.

Will I be prescribed medicine during my appointments?

Ideally, the goal is to refrain from prescribing medications. The goal is to identify the problem and treat it. Not mask it. This is often done by use of vitamins and supplements to help promote normal organ function. An over-simplified example would be this- Perhaps, a patient would schedule an appointment for migraines. In addition to identifying what is causing the migraines (maybe it is food sensitivities, allergies, mold, environmental triggers, hormones, etc), we would work on a plan to fix or remove or the irritant or problem, and possibly prescribe a supplement and/ or vitamin to help treat the symptoms and/or replenish a deficiency.

Who is not a good candidate for functional medicine?

Functional medicine can be beneficial to anyone willing to put time and effort into their wellness. If you are looking for a quick fix to treating your problems and do not want to put any effort into your care, functional medicine may not be what you are looking for.
